Since
1996, Action for Autism has held training programmes for parents and
professionals in October/November at the Indian Social Institute, Lodi
Institutional Area, New Delhi. The workshops are open to first-time
participants as well as those who would like to refresh their knowledge
and skills..
Some
of the areas typically covered:
-self-help skills: toileting, eating, going to sleep, dressing, and
others
- sensory defensiveness: why some children prefer certain foods, dislike
the
cutting of their hair, nails, and other sensory experiences
- teaching verbal and gestural communication to the child with autism
- managing challenging behaviour at home and in the public eye
- learning to accept your child: how to see your child first and the
autism later
- the setup of a demonstration classroom so participants can see how
we
structure our teaching
Workshop
for Parents
The workshop is usually three days long, and is open to all parents
and family members of children with autism. The workshop provides an
opportunity to learn practical training techniques, to talk and network
with parents from other parts of the country, and to begin to learn
to be your child's best teacher. We strongly encourage both parents
to attend the workshop.
Workshops
for Professionals
The three-day professionals workshop is open to all individuals who
presently work with autistic children or those who would like to have
an understanding of how to work with them. The workshop typically covers
aspects of assessment, planning education programmes, and classroom
structure for the child with autism.
Accommodation
In past years, accommodation has been organized for a limited number
of attendees on a priority basis.
Childcare
In past years, free daycare has been provided during workshop hours
for those families who find it difficult to leave their children at
home; however, this must be pre-arranged with Action for Autism ahead
of time.
